Murmur collects nothing. Not your speech, not your notes, not your name, not a count of how often you use it. There is no account to make and no server of mine for anything to reach. This page says how, and how to check it.

Your audio

The microphone is only live while you are capturing. Audio is held in memory for as long as it takes to turn it into words, and is never written to disk or sent anywhere.

Transcription

Speech is turned into text by Apple's on-device speech recognition, running on your Mac. The language model is downloaded and stored by macOS, not by Murmur. Transcription works with the network off.

Your transcripts

A saved capture is appended to a note called Murmur Inbox in your own Apple Notes. If Notes is unavailable, it is written to a file on your Mac instead and the app tells you where.

From that point your notes are yours and Apple's, exactly like every other note you keep. If you have iCloud syncing turned on for Notes, they sync the way your other notes do. That is between you and Apple. Murmur has no part in it and no way to read them back.

No accounts, no servers

There is nothing to sign up for. Murmur makes no network requests of its own. It does not phone home, check for updates, or report crashes.

What it is allowed to do

Murmur asks for three permissions and no others: Microphone, Speech Recognition, and Notes. It does not ask for Accessibility or Screen Recording, so it cannot see your screen or read what you type. It runs inside Apple's sandbox, which holds it to exactly that list.

This website

No analytics, no cookies, no trackers, no third-party requests. The typeface and the App Store badge are served from this site rather than from Google or Apple. Nothing here collects anything, and there is no form to fill in.

The App Store

Murmur is distributed through the Mac App Store, so downloading it is a transaction between you and Apple under Apple's privacy policy, not mine. Apple shows me aggregate, anonymous figures — how many downloads, in which countries — and nothing that identifies anyone.

Hosting

This site is hosted on Vercel, which keeps ordinary server logs of requests as any web host does.

You do not have to take this on trust. Murmur is signed and reviewed by Apple, so the copy you install is the one that was built. You can watch it with Little Snitch or a similar tool and see that it opens no connections, and you can turn the network off entirely and capture as normal.
